Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is basically a gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it, it swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach and gut. The concern with eprosartan (Teveten) is that this gel could grab onto your pill and change how much of it your body actually absorbs. It might lower the amount that gets in, which could make your blood pressure control weaker, or it could nudge it the other way.

I want to be honest: this is theoretical, based on how fiber gums behave, not on real studies with eprosartan. It's easy to sidestep too. Just take your eprosartan first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Eprosartan Used For?

  • Eprosartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Eprosartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
