Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing to know about tragacanth: it's a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits fluid in your gut. That gel can sometimes grab onto a swallowed medicine and change how much of it your body absorbs. With fenfluramine (used to control seizures in Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), the worry is that the gel could nudge your absorption up or down a bit.

This is purely theoretical, based on how the gum behaves, not on real cases with fenfluramine. Still, since steady seizure control matters so much, it's smart not to take chances. A simple fix is to space them out, taking tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your fenfluramine. Always run this by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Fenfluramine Used For?

Brand name: Pondimin

Fintepla (fenfluramine oral solution) is approved to treat seizures associated with Dravet syndrome (DS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients 2 years of age and older. It is used alongside other antiseizure medications.

Both conditions are severe, often hard-to-control forms of epilepsy that typically begin in childhood. Fintepla is available only through a restricted program called the Fintepla REMS because of serious heart-related risks.
