Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with finasteride (Propecia or Proscar): tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a slippery gel in your gut. When you take both at the same time, that gel could in theory grab onto your finasteride and slow or change how much of it your body absorbs. Less absorption might mean your medicine works a bit less well for prostate symptoms or hair loss, though we honestly don't have human studies proving this happens.

This is a theoretical concern based on how fiber gums behave, not something well documented, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your finasteride first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you set a routine.

What is Tragacanth?

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
