Dhea + Finasteride
Finasteride brand names: Propecia, Proscar.
Dhea has a moderate interaction with Finasteride. Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Finasteride
Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Dhea interacts with.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down finasteride. DHEA may, in theory, slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened, finasteride could clear out of your system a little more slowly and build up, which might nudge its effects and side effects upward. For finasteride that could mean things like lower sex drive, trouble with erections, or breast tenderness.
Now, the honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on weak, anecdotal lab hints, not real-world cases. We don't actually know if it matters in people. Since DHEA is a hormone and finasteride affects hormones too, it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Finasteride
This page covers Dhea only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Finasteride page lists 138 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 3 major · 94 moderate · 41 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Finasteride page
“The supplement list for finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) is one I would read carefully rather than skim, because three of its 138 entries are rated major. Almost everything here works through the same liver enzyme, CYP3A4, that clears finasteride.”

About Dhea
What is Dhea?
- Anti-aging and low DHEA levels
- Mood and depression
- Vaginal dryness and sexual health
- Fertility support
- Muscle mass and athletic performance
- Adrenal insufficiency
DHEA is a natural hormone that the body makes and that declines with age, and it is sold as a supplement claiming many benefits. The evidence is mixed and limited for most uses, and because it acts as a hormone it can cause real side effects. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
About Finasteride
What Is Finasteride Used For?
Brand names: Propecia, Proscar
Finasteride tablets are used in men for two main purposes, depending on the product. Which one you take depends on the strength and brand your prescriber chose.
Enlarged prostate (BPH): Proscar and finasteride tablets labeled for BPH treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. They improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to urinate). They also reduce the risk of needing surgery such as TURP or prostatectomy. With the alpha-blocker doxazosin, they reduce the risk of BPH symptoms getting worse. They are not approved to prevent prostate cancer.
Male pattern hair loss: Propecia and finasteride tablets labeled for hair loss treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Efficacy in bitemporal recession (receding at the temples) has not been established. These products are not for use in women.
