Hydrocortisone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Dhea interacts with.

Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down hydrocortisone, and some early lab work hints that DHEA may slow that enzyme down a little. If that happens, hydrocortisone could clear out of your body more slowly and build up slightly, which in theory might bump up steroid-type effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or trouble sleeping.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical and rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, so we honestly don't know if it matters in real life. For most folks taking hydrocortisone it's unlikely to cause a noticeable problem. Still, since DHEA is a hormone with its own effects, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Hydrocortisone Used For?

Brand names: Cortef, Hydrocortone, Carmol HC cream, Hydrocortisone Iodoquinol Cream, Vytone Cream, Massengil Medicated Towelettes, Dioderm, Efcortelan Cream, Mildison, Alphaderm, Calmurid HC, Efcortelan Ointment, Texacort, Alkindi Sprinkle

Hydrocortisone is used to calm skin inflammation and relieve itching caused by conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment. In adults, it treats a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions. In children as young as 3 months old, it is specifically approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema).

It is also used in rectal foam form to treat inflammation of the lower bowel, such as ulcerative proctitis.
