Selegiline falls under ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS — the group Dhea interacts with.

Theoretically, DHEA might increase the risk of psychiatric adverse events when used with antidepressants.
In a human case report, the use of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with DHEA caused a manic episode. Concern for this interaction may be greater in younger individuals with higher baseline DHEA levels.

Here's the simple version. Selegiline works on brain chemicals like dopamine, and at certain doses it can also affect mood-related signals such as serotonin. DHEA is a hormone your body turns into testosterone and estrogen, and it can nudge mood and energy too. When you stack the two, the theoretical worry is too much stimulation of mood, which could tip someone toward symptoms like agitation, racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, or even a manic-type high.

This concern is mostly theoretical, based on lab work and a single case report with a different antidepressant, so it's far from a sure thing. Still, since both touch mood, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before pairing DHEA with selegiline, especially if you've ever had mood swings.

What Is Selegiline Used For?

Brand names: Carbex, Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar

Selegiline is used as an add-on treatment for people with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa but are finding that the medication's effects are wearing off or becoming less reliable. It is not used alone — it only works as part of a combination approach.

In clinical studies, adding selegiline helped reduce the amount of daily levodopa needed, cut down on "off" time (periods when symptoms break through), and improved things like tremor, speech, movement, and overall daily function.
