Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with Ninlaro (ixazomib) and tragacanth. This gum swells into a thick, slippery gel in your gut, and that gel can grab onto a pill you swallow around the same time. In theory, that could change how much ixazomib your body actually absorbs. It might pull the level down (less cancer-fighting effect), or it could shift it up. Honestly, we don't have human studies pinning this down, so it's a theoretical concern based on how fiber gels behave.

Since ixazomib is an important, carefully dosed oral cancer drug, I wouldn't want absorption wandering around. A simple fix is spacing: take ixazomib first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before tragacanth. Please run this past your oncology team or pharmacist before combining them.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Ixazomib Used For?

Brand name: Ninlaro

Ninlaro (ixazomib) is used to treat multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is always used together with two other medicines, lenalidomide and dexamethasone, and is approved for adults who have already tried at least one other treatment.

Ninlaro is not recommended as maintenance therapy or for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone outside of controlled clinical trials.
