Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing to know about tragacanth: it's a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel when it hits liquid in your stomach. That gel can sometimes grab onto a pill you swallow around the same time and change how much gets absorbed. With leflunomide (Arava), the worry is mostly theoretical. It hasn't actually been studied with this drug, so we're going off how fiber gums behave in general.

If absorption dropped, leflunomide might not control your rheumatoid arthritis as well (more joint pain and swelling). If it nudged absorption up, you could see more of its typical side effects, like diarrhea, nausea, or hair thinning. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your leflunomide first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Run it by your pharmacist to be safe.

Leflunomide tablets — sold under the brand name Arava and as generic leflunomide — are used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults. Both Arava and generic leflunomide tablets are FDA-approved for this use.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Leflunomide helps calm that overactive immune response to reduce symptoms and slow joint damage.
