Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can grab onto pills and change how much of a medicine your body absorbs. With lomitapide, the worry is that the gel could either slow down or reduce how much you take in, which might weaken its cholesterol-lowering job. It's also possible it could nudge absorption the other way. Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not from real studies on lomitapide.

The easy fix is timing. If you use tragacanth, take it about 30 to 60 minutes after your lomitapide so it doesn't interfere. Since lomitapide is a specialized drug for a serious condition, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Lomitapide

What Is Lomitapide Used For?

Brand name: Juxtapid

Juxtapid (lomitapide) is used alongside a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments — including LDL apheresis (a procedure that filters LDL from the blood) where available — to lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is a rare, inherited condition that causes extremely high LDL cholesterol levels from birth.

Juxtapid is approved for use in adults and in children aged 2 years and older with HoFH. It has not been proven safe or effective for other types of high cholesterol, including the more common heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Its effect on heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular events has not been established.
