Here's the situation with tragacanth and your megestrol. Tragacanth is mostly a gel-forming fiber, and when it swells up in your stomach it can grab onto pills and slow or change how they get absorbed. Since megestrol is taken by mouth, there's a theoretical chance the gum could nudge how much actually gets into your system, either a little less or a little more.

I want to be honest: this is based on how the fiber behaves, not on real studies with megestrol, so it's more caution than alarm. If megestrol's absorption dropped, you might not get the appetite boost or weight gain you're aiming for. A simple fix is timing. Take your megestrol first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Run it by your pharmacist to be safe.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Megestrol Used For?

Brand names: Megestrol, Megace

Megestrol acetate is used for two distinct purposes depending on the formulation. Megestrol Acetate oral suspension is indicated for treating anorexia (loss of appetite), cachexia (severe weight loss and muscle wasting), or unexplained significant weight loss in patients with a diagnosis of AIDS.

Megestrol Acetate tablets are used for the palliative treatment — meaning to ease symptoms, not cure — of advanced breast cancer or endometrial (uterine lining) cancer that is recurrent, inoperable, or has spread to other parts of the body. Tablets are not a replacement for surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
