Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits fluid in your stomach. That gel can act like a sponge and grab onto medicine you swallow, which may change how much of your melphalan (Alkeran) actually gets absorbed. It could lower the amount, raise it, or do nothing at all, so the direction isn't predictable.

This matters more with melphalan than with everyday drugs because it's a chemotherapy pill where the dose is carefully balanced. Too little may mean weaker cancer treatment, and too much can worsen side effects like low blood counts, nausea, and infection risk. To be safe, take tragacanth well separated from your dose, and please run this by your oncology pharmacist or doctor first. Note this concern is theoretical, based on how the gum behaves, not proven studies.

What Is Melphalan Used For?

Brand names: Alkeran, Hepzato

Melphalan is used to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. The specific use depends on the product and form.

Evomela (intravenous) is used as a high-dose conditioning treatment before a stem cell transplant in multiple myeloma patients. Ivra (intravenous) is used for palliative treatment — meaning to manage the disease and symptoms — in multiple myeloma patients for whom oral therapy is not appropriate. Alkeran (oral tablet) is also used for palliative treatment of multiple myeloma.
