Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing worth knowing about tragacanth: when it hits fluid, it swells into a thick, slippery gel. The concern on file is that this gel could grab onto medicine you swallow and change how much your body absorbs (it might lower it, raise it, or do nothing at all). That's why the general advice is to space tragacanth 30 to 60 minutes apart from oral pills.

For your situation, though, this is a bit of a mismatch. The Virazole form of ribavirin is an inhaled aerosol mist, not a swallowed tablet, so a gut-thickening gum really has nothing to act on. This whole interaction is also theoretical, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases. If you ever switch to oral ribavirin, just mention it to your pharmacist.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Ribavirin

What Is Ribavirin Used For?

Brand name: Virazole

Ribavirin comes in different forms for different uses. Ribavirin capsules are used in combination with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated or non-pegylated) to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in patients 3 years and older with compensated liver disease. Ribavirin tablets are used in combination with PEGASYS® (peginterferon alfa-2a) to treat chronic hepatitis C in patients 5 years and older with compensated liver disease who have not previously been treated with interferon — including adults who also have HIV. Ribavirin for inhalation solution is a separate product used to treat hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Ribavirin must never be used alone to treat hepatitis C — it only works as part of combination therapy. Only the most severe RSV infections requiring hospitalization should be treated with the inhaled form; mild RSV illness in children does not require this treatment.
