Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist: tragacanth is a fiber-rich gum that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. When you take it close to a swallowed pill like Selexipag (Uptravi), that gel could grab onto the medicine and change how much your body absorbs. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not something proven in studies, so don't panic.

The tricky part is the effect can go either way. If absorption drops, your PAH may not be controlled as well. If it rises, you might notice more of Selexipag's usual side effects, like headache, jaw pain, flushing, nausea, or diarrhea. A simple fix is spacing them out: take Selexipag first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Selexipag

What Is Selexipag Used For?

Brand name: Uptravi

Selexipag tablets are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group I) — a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. The goal is to slow the disease from getting worse and to reduce the chances of being hospitalized because of PAH.

Uptravi (selexipag) tablets are approved for both adults and children aged 2 years and older. Uptravi for injection (intravenous) is also available for adult patients who are already on Uptravi tablets but temporarily cannot take medicine by mouth.
