Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is mostly a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it around the same time as a pill like simeprevir (Olysio), that gel can sit in your stomach and gut and grab onto the medicine. In theory, that could change how much simeprevir your body actually absorbs, either a little less, a little more, or no real difference at all.

For simeprevir, getting too little could mean it works less well at lowering the hepatitis C virus, which matters during treatment. I want to stress this is theoretical, based on how fiber behaves, not on real studies with this drug. To stay safe, a good habit is to take your simeprevir first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
