STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Codeine
Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Codeine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Tyramine interacts with.
Tyramine is thought to have stimulant effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece of this combo pill that matters here is the caffeine. Caffeine is a mild stimulant, and tyramine (the natural compound in aged cheese, cured meats, and fermented foods) can have a gentle stimulant-like effect too by nudging your body to release norepinephrine. On paper, stacking the two could add up to a slightly faster heartbeat or a small bump in blood pressure.
I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something well documented in real patients. For most people, normal food amounts of tyramine plus this medication are unlikely to cause trouble. If you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, or you notice a racing heart or jitteriness, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Tyramine
What is Tyramine?
- Studied for effects on blood pressure
- Discussed in relation to migraine and headache triggers
- Of interest in food and diet science
- Subject of research on the nervous system
Tyramine is a natural compound formed when certain proteins break down, and it is found in aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented foods, and some other items. It is not a typical health supplement and is best known for the problems it can cause—such as dangerous spikes in blood pressure—in people taking certain medications or in those who are sensitive to it. If you have been told to follow a low-tyramine diet, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes.
