Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination product contains codeine, which is an opioid that can make you drowsy on its own. California poppy has been studied mostly in lab dishes and animals, where its plant compounds appear to have a mild calming effect. When you pair two things that both relax the nervous system, the sleepiness can add up. With this medicine that may mean extra drowsiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or feeling foggy. In rare cases opioids can slow breathing, so stacking sedatives is worth being thoughtful about.

That said, the evidence here is theoretical and not proven in people, so this isn't a reason to panic. Before combining them, it's smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor, and avoid driving until you know how you feel.
