CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Ethynodiol Diacetate, Mestranol
Ethynodiol Diacetate, Mestranol falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with.
Vitex agnus-castus might interfere with the efficacy of oral contraceptives due to possible hormone modulating activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Ovulen is a combination birth control pill that pairs a progestin (ethynodiol diacetate) with an estrogen (mestranol). It works by keeping your hormone levels steady enough to stop ovulation. Vitex (chasteberry) acts on your brain's pituitary gland and can nudge your own reproductive hormones, like prolactin, in either direction.
The concern here is mostly theoretical. Because vitex tinkers with the same hormone signals your pill relies on, there's a chance it could blunt how well the pill prevents pregnancy. We don't have strong human studies proving this happens, so don't panic, but I wouldn't lean on it as your only safeguard. Chat with your pharmacist or doctor, and consider a backup method (like condoms) while you sort it out.
