Vitex Agnus-castus and Flupenthixol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Flupenthixol

Flupenthixol falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with.

Theoretically, vitex agnus-castus could interfere with the activity of antipsychotic drugs.
Vitex agnus-castus might interfere with the action of dopamine antagonists such as antipsychotic drugs due to its dopamine agonist effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Flupenthixol (Fluanxol) is an antipsychotic that works by blocking dopamine in the brain. Chasteberry seems to do the opposite, nudging dopamine activity upward. So in theory, taking them together could work against each other and make your flupenthixol a little less effective. That might mean your symptoms aren't as well controlled as they should be.

I want to be honest about how weak this evidence is. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from real people, so it may not amount to much in practice. Still, since flupenthixol is treating something important, I'd loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding vitex rather than starting it on your own.
