CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Mestranol, Norethindrone
Mestranol, Norethindrone falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with.
Vitex agnus-castus might interfere with the efficacy of oral contraceptives due to possible hormone modulating activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your pill, a combination of mestranol and norethindrone, works by giving your body steady hormone levels that prevent ovulation. The concern here is that vitex (chasteberry) can nudge your own hormone system, including prolactin and the signals that control your cycle. In theory, that hormonal tug-of-war could work against your birth control and make it slightly less reliable.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's mostly theoretical and based on how vitex acts on hormones, not on real cases of pregnancy. Still, because an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, I'd play it safe. Don't stop either one on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor, and consider a backup method like condoms while you sort it out.
