Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group White Horehound interacts with.

Evidence from animal research suggests that white horehound might lower blood glucose. However, preliminary clinical research suggests that white horehound only slightly lowers blood glucose when taken in combination with antidiabetic agents, suggesting that the effect may not be clinically significant. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, white horehound may have additive effects when used by patients taking antidiabetic drugs. The dose of diabetes medications might need to be adjusted. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the gist for anyone taking canagliflozin (Invokana) alongside white horehound. This isn't about one herb changing how your body processes the other. Instead, white horehound may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own, so stacking it on top of your diabetes medicine could nudge your glucose a little lower than expected.

The good news is that the human research we have is limited and suggests the added effect is small, probably not enough to cause trouble for most folks. Still, it's worth watching for signs your sugar is running low, like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired. Cough drops flavored with horehound are unlikely to matter; concentrated supplement doses are the bigger question. Before adding it regularly, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
