Evidence from animal research suggests that taking white horehound extract lowers blood pressure. Theoretically, taking white horehound with antihypertensive drugs might enhance therapeutic effects and increase the risk of hypotension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the basic idea with isradipine and white horehound. Isradipine is a calcium channel blocker that already works to lower your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Animal studies hint that white horehound may nudge blood pressure down too. So if you pair them, the concern is simply additive: your pressure could drop a bit more than expected.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy or lightheaded, get a headache, feel your heart racing, or feel faint when you stand up quickly. To be clear, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on lab and animal data, not strong human studies, so don't panic. An occasional horehound cough drop is unlikely to matter much. Before using concentrated horehound supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.
