Desipramine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Yin Chen interacts with.

Theoretically, yin chen might enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of other CNS depressants.
Animal research shows that yin chen has sedative effects and can reduce motor activity and impair balance and coordination. When used in combination with pentobarbital, yin chen increases sleeping time when compared to pentobarbital alone.

Here's the gist for desipramine (Norpramin). This is a tricyclic antidepressant, and like a lot of these medicines, it can already make you feel drowsy or a little foggy on its own. The concern with Yin Chen is that, in animal studies, this herb showed sedative effects, slowing movement and throwing off balance and coordination. So the worry is mainly an additive one: two things that can each cause sleepiness, stacked together.

If you took both, you might notice more drowsiness, dizziness, or grogginess than usual. I'll be honest though, this is theoretical and based on animal research, not human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your desipramine on your own.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
