Yogurt and Omadacycline (Oral)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Omadacycline (Oral)

Omadacycline (Oral) falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Yogurt interacts with.

Taking yogurt with tetracycline antibiotics seems to reduce the levels and clinical effects of tetracycline antibiotics.
Concomitant administration with yogurt can reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, likely due to its calcium content.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with oral omadacycline (Nuzyra): like other tetracycline antibiotics, it can grab onto calcium and other minerals in your gut. Yogurt is rich in calcium, so eating it close to your dose may bind up some of the drug before your body can absorb it. That can leave less antibiotic in your system to fight the infection.

If too little gets absorbed, the worry is that your infection (such as pneumonia or a skin infection) may not clear as well as it should. This concern is based on how the drug behaves chemically rather than hard clinical studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. To be safe, separate yogurt and other dairy from your dose, and ask your pharmacist exactly how many hours apart to space them.

About Yogurt

What is Yogurt?

  • Digestive health
  • Restoring gut bacteria after antibiotics
  • Vaginal yeast or bacterial balance
  • Source of protein and calcium
  • General immune and gut support

Yogurt is a fermented dairy food that often contains live bacteria (probiotics) and provides protein, calcium, and other nutrients. For most healthy people it is a safe, nutritious food, and some yogurts with live cultures may help with digestion and gut balance, though evidence varies by strain and condition. If you are lactose intolerant, have a milk allergy, or have a weakened immune system, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Omadacycline Injection

What Is Omadacycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Nuzyra

Nuzyra (omadacycline) injection is used in adults to treat two types of serious bacterial infections: community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) — a lung infection picked up outside of a hospital — and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI), which include serious skin infections such as those caused by MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

Nuzyra works only against bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral illnesses like the flu or common cold. Your doctor will prescribe it only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
