Yogurt and Sumatriptan

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sumatriptan and Yogurt in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Sumatriptan

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Sumatriptan is filed under 4 classifications — including qt interval-prolonging drugs, serotonergic drugs, serotonergic drugs. Yogurt has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being ciprofloxacin (cipro) (moderate), tetracycline antibiotics (moderate) and nilotinib (tasigna) (minor) — and none of Sumatriptan’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Yogurt Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Sumatriptan. It is the side-effect record for Yogurt on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Yogurt, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Yogurt — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Sumatriptan’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Sumatriptan column appears here.

This page covers Yogurt only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Sumatriptan page lists 50 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sumatriptan page

“The supplement risk that matters most with sumatriptan (Tosymra) is serotonin overload. This migraine drug works through serotonin receptors, and 20 of the 50 interacting ingredients on file, 5-HTP among them, can push serotonin activity higher still, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, fever).”

About Yogurt

What is Yogurt?

  • Digestive health
  • Restoring gut bacteria after antibiotics
  • Vaginal yeast or bacterial balance
  • Source of protein and calcium
  • General immune and gut support

Yogurt is a fermented dairy food that often contains live bacteria (probiotics) and provides protein, calcium, and other nutrients. For most healthy people it is a safe, nutritious food, and some yogurts with live cultures may help with digestion and gut balance, though evidence varies by strain and condition. If you are lactose intolerant, have a milk allergy, or have a weakened immune system, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Fermented milk product (made with live bacterial cultures) · Plain yogurt, Greek yogurt, drinkable yogurt (kefir-style), probiotic yogurt, dairy-free yogurt alternatives

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Yogurt is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Yogurt record says about it on its own.

Yogurt: dosing

There is no official "dose" for yogurt because it is a food, not a standardized medicine. The amount and type of live bacteria can vary widely from product to product, and many people simply eat one or more servings a day as part of a healthy diet.If you are using yogurt specifically for its probiotic content, look for a label that says "live and active cultures" and check whether the strains are listed. There is no proven "best" amount for any health condition. If you want a specific probiotic strain or dose, a standardized probiotic supplement may be more reliable.
