Here's the good news for anyone asking about yogurt and doripenem (Doribax): the concern on file really applies to oral tetracycline pills, where calcium from dairy can bind the antibiotic in your stomach and block it from being absorbed. Doripenem is different. It is a carbapenem antibiotic, and it is given as an injection or IV, not a pill you swallow. Because it goes straight into your bloodstream, food and yogurt in your gut don't change how much medicine you actually get.

So in practical terms, eating yogurt should not weaken your doripenem or cause your infection to come back. This particular warning is theoretical and aimed at a different drug class. Still, if you have any questions about your treatment, it's always smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
