Yogurt and Tigecycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Tigecycline

Tigecycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Yogurt interacts with.

Taking yogurt with tetracycline antibiotics seems to reduce the levels and clinical effects of tetracycline antibiotics.
Concomitant administration with yogurt can reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, likely due to its calcium content.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's some good news that takes the worry off the table. Tigecycline is given as an IV infusion, straight into your bloodstream, not as a pill you swallow. The concern with yogurt and tetracycline-type antibiotics is that the calcium in dairy can bind to the drug in your stomach and block it from being absorbed, which would weaken how well it fights the infection. But that absorption problem only applies to oral forms.

Since tigecycline skips your digestive tract entirely, eating yogurt won't lower its levels or reduce its effect. This interaction is theoretical and based on how the drug class behaves by mouth, so for the IV form it really doesn't apply. Enjoy your yogurt, and if you ever have questions about your treatment, your pharmacist or doctor is happy to help.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tigecycline page

“Tigecycline (Tygacil) is an intravenous antibiotic usually reserved for serious or resistant infections, and its supplement list deserves real attention. About Yogurt

What is Yogurt?

  • Digestive health
  • Restoring gut bacteria after antibiotics
  • Vaginal yeast or bacterial balance
  • Source of protein and calcium
  • General immune and gut support

Yogurt is a fermented dairy food that often contains live bacteria (probiotics) and provides protein, calcium, and other nutrients. For most healthy people it is a safe, nutritious food, and some yogurts with live cultures may help with digestion and gut balance, though evidence varies by strain and condition. If you are lactose intolerant, have a milk allergy, or have a weakened immune system, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Tigecycline Injection

What Is Tigecycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Tygacil

Tygacil (tigecycline for injection) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat three types of serious bacterial infections: complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal (stomach and intestinal) infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (pneumonia caught outside a hospital).

It is not approved for diabetic foot infections or for pneumonia caught in a hospital setting, including ventilator-associated pneumonia — clinical trials showed it did not work well enough for those uses and was associated with higher mortality in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
