Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Darunavir, Ritonavir
Darunavir, Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Both darunavir and ritonavir are handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In fact, ritonavir is often added on purpose as a 'booster' because it blocks that same enzyme to keep darunavir levels up. Lab studies hint that zedoary may also slow CYP3A4, so in theory it could nudge these drug levels a little higher, which might mean more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or changes in fat and blood sugar.
I want to be honest with you though: this is only a test-tube and theory-based concern, not something proven in people, and normal cooking amounts of this spice are unlikely to matter. Still, since HIV therapy needs steady levels, please run any concentrated zedoary supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.
