Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by CVS Health
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
CVS Health Acidophilus is a single-ingredient probiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, a beneficial live bacterial strain. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients: cellulose, silica, stearic acid, and vegetable magnesium stearate, which are fillers and binders that hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supporting L. acidophilus comes from clinical research on specific health conditions. It's rated Possibly Effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For atopic disease (allergic conditions), the evidence suggests it's Possibly Ineffective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome, we don't yet have enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Some people taking it alongside other probiotics have reported mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, or loose stools, though these are uncommon.
In rare cases, L. acidophilus has been associated with serious infections in people with very weak immune systems; however, most cases appear to involve bacteria that were already present elsewhere in the body. Because the safety data are somewhat limited, it's a good idea to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a compromised immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, let your pharmacist know before you start this probiotic. Antibiotics can kill the live organisms, so you'll want to space them apart.
For all other medications, no interactions are documented — but run your full medication list through the search tool on this page to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
CVS Health Acidophilus may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and a few other digestive or bacterial conditions. If you're taking antibiotics, you'll need to time the probiotic separately to make sure it works.
Talk to your pharmacist about the right schedule and whether it's a good fit for your situation.

Acidophilus by CVS Health Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
CVS Health Acidophilus contains one active ingredient, Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live probiotic organism.
It has a documented Moderate interaction with antibiotic drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
When you take antibiotics at the same time as L. acidophilus, the antibiotics can kill a significant number of the live organisms in the probiotic, which may decrease how well the probiotic works. To get the most benefit from both, you'll want to separate when you take them — your pharmacist can help you figure out the right timing.
No interactions are documented for this product with other medication types. That said, because L. acidophilus is a live microorganism, there's a small theoretical concern it could cause infection in people with severely weakened immune systems, though this is rare.
If you take antibiotics, use the medication checker on this page to confirm the timing with your pharmacist or doctor.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
