Adult Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by CVS Pharmacy
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Adult Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 7 active probiotic ingredients — live beneficial bacteria intended to support digestive and overall health. The main strains are Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
The inactive ingredients are maltodextrin, inulin, magnesium stearate, and ascorbic acid.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed and incomplete. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows the most promise — it's possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea (loose stools brought on by antibiotics), and bacterial vaginosis.
The other strains in this blend either show insufficient evidence to rate or haven't been well studied for common conditions. For most of the uses people ask about, the research just isn't there yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, the data are limited, so check with your doctor before starting — especially if you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Rare cases of infection in the bloodstream (bacteremia) have been reported in critically ill patients and premature infants, though this is uncommon in otherwise healthy people. Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort have been reported rarely.
Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe in pregnancy; Lactobacillus acidophilus is also rated possibly safe in pregnancy, though safety data during lactation weren't available for these specific strains.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotics, tell your pharmacist you're using this probiotic — space them out by a few hours so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial bacteria. We couldn't check three of the seven strains in this product for interactions, so use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic makes sense if you're dealing with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis — Lactobacillus acidophilus has some good evidence for those. If you're on antibiotics, separate the timing by a few hours so the antibiotics don't kill off the live bacteria.
If you're very ill, immunocompromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor first.

Adult Probiotic by CVS Pharmacy Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
CVS Pharmacy Adult Probiotic contains several live bacterial strains, and the main interaction concern is with antibiotic drugs.
Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus acidophilus can all interact with antibiotics in a Moderate way — antibiotics may kill the live organisms in the probiotic, reducing its effectiveness. The fix is straightforward: space out when you take them, ideally a few hours apart.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, we could not check three of the seven bacterial strains in this product — Lactobacillus casei, Lactococcus lactis, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus — because we hold no interaction data for them. Streptococcus thermophilus, which we did check, has no interactions documented in our data.
Additionally, it is not a guarantee that no interactions exist with those three unchecked ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Adult Probiotic with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bifidobacterium breve
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
