ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Phenazopyridine, Sulfisoxazole
Phenazopyridine, Sulfisoxazole falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Azo-Gantrisin contains sulfisoxazole, which is an antibiotic. Antibiotics don't care whether bacteria are 'bad' germs or the 'friendly' kind in your probiotic. So if you swallow your Bifidobacterium breve at the same time as this medicine, the sulfisoxazole may kill off a good chunk of those live cultures before they ever get a chance to help your gut. In short, the probiotic just won't work as well.
This is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics behave, not a dangerous reaction, and it does not reduce how well the medicine treats your infection or eases bladder discomfort. The easy fix is timing: take them at least 2 hours apart. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist to help you map out a schedule.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenazopyridine, Sulfisoxazole page
“Azo-Gantrisin pairs sulfisoxazole, a sulfa antibiotic, with phenazopyridine to ease urinary pain, and I'd want anyone taking it to pause before adding supplements. Two of the 68 ingredients on file rate major, and both can undercut the treatment itself: PABA feeds bacteria the raw material the sulfa drug is built to block, and activate…”

- Infant colic and gut support
- Diarrhea (including antibiotic-related)
- Constipation
- General immune and gut microbiome support
Bifidobacterium breve is a 'friendly' gut bacterium taken as a probiotic, most often to support digestion and balance the gut microbiome.
