Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Theanine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Theanine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Cognitive function — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

L-theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function. For other uses listed — age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety disorders like GAD and OCD — the evidence isn't strong enough to rate.

We hold no effectiveness data for apigenin in our system.

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, or more vivid dreams.

There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're in either situation.

Before you take this, check your medications against these types: blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives) — theanine can lower your pressure further — and sedating or brain-depressant drugs (CNS depressants). Serotonergic drugs (like certain antidepressants) show mixed research, but no cases of harm have been reported.

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Serotonergic Drugs

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Apigenin 50 mg with L-Theanine by aSquared Nutrition: Common Questions

Does Apigenin 50 mg with L-Theanine by aSquared Nutrition interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Apigenin 50 mg with L-Theanine has a known interaction with 565 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Apigenin 50 mg with L-Theanine contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-theanine and what does it do?
L-theanine is an amino acid from tea that may help support cognitive function — how your brain thinks and focuses. It's possibly effective for that, though the research is still developing.
Can I take this if I'm on blood pressure medication?
Not without checking with your pharmacist first. L-theanine can lower blood pressure on its own, so adding it to your blood pressure drug might make your pressure drop too much. Your pharmacist can tell you whether it's safe for your specific medications and dose.
Will this make me drowsy?
Some people report drowsiness or increased sleep after taking L-theanine, though it's not the main effect. If you're also on sedating medications, the risk is higher, so mention that to your pharmacist.
Is it safe to take during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data, so it's best to avoid it while pregnant or nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for your situation.
How much safety data is there on long-term use?
L-theanine is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. If you plan to take it regularly over months, that's worth discussing with your pharmacist.
