Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Herbal Terra's Asafoetida is a single-ingredient liquid extract made from certified organic dried asafoetida herb. It contains one active ingredient, delivered in a menstruum base (the liquid used to extract and preserve the herb).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Asafoetida product and its label doesn't state a use — see Asafoetida's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for asafoetida isn't established in the data we hold. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or COVID-19.

If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the research supports its use for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Asafoetida appears generally well tolerated at food amounts, but medicinal doses haven't been well studied. At large doses, some people have reported swelling of the lips, belching, bloating, diarrhea, headache, or convulsions.

There are also reports of a type of anemia (infantile methemoglobinemia) linked to asafoetida, and topical use has been reported to cause genital swelling. The safety data advises against medicinal doses during pregnancy and breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe at supplement levels in either situation.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether you should use it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Asafoetida.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 289 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check before you start if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin, Plavix, or ibuprofen) or any blood pressure medication. Both interactions are Moderate severity and can change how these drugs work or raise your bleeding risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Asafoetida may appeal to you if you're exploring herbal options for digestive or hormonal concerns, but the evidence for those uses isn't established yet. If you take blood pressure medication or blood thinners, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it — the interaction risk is real.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, asafoetida might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Antihypertensive Drugs

Evidence from animal research suggests that asafoetida has hypotensive effects. Theoretically, concomitant use may increase therapeutic effects of antihypertensive therapy due to hypotensive activity of asafoetida. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Asafoetida by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Asafoetida by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Asafoetida has a known interaction with 289 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.

Asafoetida contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I use asafoetida while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advises against medicinal doses during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering it in either situation.
What side effects might I notice?
At food amounts, asafoetida is generally well tolerated. Large doses have been reported to cause lip swelling, belching, bloating, diarrhea, headache, or convulsions. There are also rare reports of a type of anemia in infants.
Does asafoetida actually work for IBS or PCOS?
The evidence isn't established in our data. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for irritable bowel syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, or COVID-19, so we can't tell you whether it works for those conditions.
Why does this product have so many medication interactions if it's an herb?
