Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Astaxanthin 6 mg by DC contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin, a carotenoid (a plant pigment) that acts as an antioxidant. The softgel also includes several inactive ingredients — safflower oil, gelatin, vegetable glycerin, yellow beeswax, and sunflower lecithin — which help deliver the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish whether astaxanthin works for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome. All of these uses are rated as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate at this time.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin at this dose appears to be generally well tolerated, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported in studies were abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
At the 6 mg dose, a small number of trial participants experienced increased bowel movements and red fecal color. There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — the safety data advises against using it during both.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor about any drugs you're on that are broken down by the CYP3A4 enzyme — this is a moderate-severity interaction and could lower their levels. Also double-check any medications metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme, which carries the same moderate-severity risk.
The tool on this page can help you match your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin might appeal to you if you're interested in antioxidant support, though we don't yet have solid evidence for any specific condition. Because it interacts with a large number of medications through liver enzyme pathways, you'll want to run your prescriptions through the checker on this page before you take it.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product makes sense for you.

Astaxanthin 6 mg by DC Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 6 mg by DC can interact with a sizable number of medications.
The ingredient astaxanthin may theoretically speed up how your liver breaks down drugs that rely on the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway — a moderate-severity concern. This means some medications in that group could become less effective.
Astaxanthin also theoretically may increase the breakdown of drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme, another moderate-severity interaction. Keep in mind these effects have been seen in lab studies of human liver cells but haven't yet been confirmed in actual people.
