What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin 6 mg (delivered as AstaReal). Astaxanthin is a carotenoid — a naturally occurring pigment — that your body gets primarily from sea organisms like algae, krill, and salmon.
It's an antioxidant that some people take for joint health, skin health, eye health, and athletic performance. The softgel capsule also contains extra virgin olive oil, bovine gelatin, glycerin, and purified water as inactive ingredients to deliver the astaxanthin.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that astaxanthin is effective for the conditions we have ratings on — age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome. All are rated as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
This doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the scientific data available to us isn't strong enough to draw a firm conclusion either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, though long-term safety data are limited. At the 6 mg dose in this product, the most common side effects reported in trials were abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool — a harmless discoloration caused by the pigment itself.
A small number of trial participants at 6 mg experienced increased bowel movements and red stool; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), a small number reported severe stomach pain. There isn't enough safety data to recommend astaxanthin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before using it in these situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any medication your liver processes through the CYP3A4 pathway (Moderate severity) — astaxanthin may theoretically lower their levels, though this hasn't been reported in people. Also check drugs metabolized by CYP2B6 (Moderate severity) for the same reason.
Use the search tool on this page to run your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a pigment antioxidant that you'll find in seafood. This product is generally well tolerated at 6 mg, though digestive effects and red stool are possible.
Before you start, check your medications against the interactions listed below — especially if you take drugs processed by your liver. Talk to your pharmacist if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on a long-term medication.

Astaxanthin 6 mg by Nature's Lab Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 6 mg by Nature's Lab can interact with medications that your liver processes through two specific enzyme pathways.
The most serious documented interactions are Moderate in severity and involve drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 substrates — astaxanthin may theoretically decrease their blood levels, though this hasn't been reported in humans yet. In vitro research shows astaxanthin can increase activity of these liver enzymes in lab conditions.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
A second group of Moderate interactions involves CYP2B6 substrates — drugs your liver breaks down through this pathway may also have lower levels if you're taking astaxanthin. Again, this is based on lab findings, not human studies.
Although 661 medications overall are affected by CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 interactions across supplement ingredients, astaxanthin's specific effect hasn't been confirmed in people. Before you start, search for your exact medications below — we'll flag which ones are affected.
