Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Bacopa monnieri aerial parts extract, a liquid form made from the above-ground portions of the Bacopa plant. The extract is prepared in a base of certified organic cane alcohol, distilled water, and glycerin, which are inactive ingredients used as the carrier and preservative.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Bacopa's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: mental clarity and nervous system support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Depression, Insomnia, memory — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Depression, Insomnia.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that bacopa is effective for any of the conditions it's marketed for — including Alzheimer disease, cognitive function, ADHD, back pain, sexual dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Each of these ratings comes back as insufficient reliable evidence.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the studies available to us haven't shown it does, or the research isn't solid enough to draw conclusions.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bacopa is generally well tolerated in the studies we have, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal: abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, and decreased appetite, with rates ranging from 12% to 30% in trials.

Some people have also reported drowsiness, headache, insomnia, and vivid dreams. There isn't enough safety information to use bacopa during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — the safety data advises against it in both cases.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bacopa.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 931 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take any drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP1A2 enzymes (a very large group covering many common medications). Also check if you're on anticholinergic drugs, cholinergic drugs, cevimeline (Evoxac), or thyroid hormone.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're considering bacopa for memory or focus, understand that we don't yet have solid evidence it works for those purposes. More importantly, bacopa interacts with a very large number of medications through liver metabolism and other mechanisms, and the real-world impact isn't fully known.

Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take any prescription drugs — a quick check of your medications against this product could save you from a problem.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cevimeline (Evoxac)

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.

Bacopa by Herb Pharm: Common Questions

Does Bacopa by Herb Pharm interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bacopa has a known interaction with 930 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bacopa contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is bacopa safe to take while I'm pregnant or nursing?
No. There isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against using bacopa during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering it if you're in either situation.
What are the most common side effects?
Bacopa most often causes gastrointestinal issues — abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, and loss of appetite. These occur in 12% to 30% of people in studies. Some also report drowsiness, headache, vivid dreams, or insomnia.
Does bacopa actually work for memory or brain function?
We don't have enough reliable evidence to say it works for Alzheimer disease, ADHD, cognitive function, or cognitive impairment. The research we hold on these uses is insufficient to draw conclusions.
Why does this product interact with so many medications?
Bacopa extract appears to slow down several of your liver's main drug-processing enzymes. Since your liver breaks down hundreds of different medications, bacopa can theoretically affect a very large number of them. That's why checking your specific drugs is crucial.
Is this product safe to take long-term?
We don't have good long-term safety data for bacopa. Studies show it's generally well tolerated in the short run, but we don't know enough about what happens with extended use.
What's in this liquid besides bacopa?
The extract is suspended in certified organic cane alcohol, distilled water, and glycerin. These are inactive ingredients that act as the carrier and keep the product stable.
