Basis contains two active ingredients: nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene. Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3 that your cells use to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in energy production and cellular repair.
Pterostilbene is a compound found in plants; we don't hold detailed information on its intended role in this formula. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silica — these are fillers and binders that give the capsule its form.

The evidence for nicotinamide riboside in the conditions Basis is marketed for — age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and heart failure — is rated as insufficient reliable evidence in our data. That means studies to date haven't established whether it works for these purposes.
We also hold no effectiveness data for pterostilbene.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Nicotinamide riboside appears generally well tolerated in short-term studies, though long-term safety isn't fully known. The most commonly reported side effects in trials were bloating, muscle pain, nausea, itching, sweating, and changes in bowel habits.
Stomach upset, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort have been reported with Basis itself, though it's unclear whether these came from nicotinamide riboside, pterostilbene, or the combination. Leg cramps were reported in one patient in a separate trial.
There isn't enough safety data to know either way about nicotinamide riboside in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
