Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Broccoli Sprout product and its label doesn't state a use — see Broccoli Sprout's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for broccoli sprout extract is not yet established in our data for any of the conditions it's marketed for — including hay fever, asthma, prostate cancer, liver disease, and Helicobacter pylori infection. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means we don't hold reliable clinical evidence one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Broccoli sprouts as food are generally well tolerated, but concentrated supplements like this one haven't been studied as thoroughly. The most common side effects reported with broccoli sprout extracts are loose stools, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cramping, especially at higher doses.

Raw broccoli sprouts can occasionally carry harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli if they've been grown improperly; cooking eliminates that risk. The safety data for this supplement in pregnancy and breastfeeding is mixed — it's rated likely safe in pregnancy but possibly unsafe during breastfeeding.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant or nursing.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, broccoli sprout might reduce levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal research shows that broccoli sprout extract can increase CYP1A2 gene expression. Also, pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to glucosinolate constituents, which are also found in broccoli sprout.

Theoretically, broccoli sprout might reduce levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2A6.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating broccoli 500 grams daily for 6 days increases CYP2A6 activity by 135% to 550%. Induction of CYP2A6 is attributed to glucosinolate constituents, which are also found in broccoli sprout.
