Calm Support Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by GaiaKids
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Calm Support against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Calm Support contains six active ingredients in extract form, all of which are organic. The proprietary extract blend at the top of the label breaks down into five individual herbal extracts: skullcap aerial parts, passionflower flowering vine, California poppy whole plant, vervain, and lemon balm.
The sixth active ingredient is English lavender extract. These are suspended in vegetable glycerin and water as a liquid formula.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed and largely limited. Passionflower and lemon balm are rated possibly effective for anxiety and stress-related conditions — passionflower for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety, lemon balm for stress and mood support.
Lavender is rated possibly effective for menstrual discomfort (dysmenorrhea). For the other uses and ingredients — skullcap for epilepsy, stress, or other conditions; California poppy for anxiety or sleep; and vervain — the evidence isn't established well enough to rate them.
We hold no effectiveness data for vervain.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap, passionflower, California poppy, and lemon balm are generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited for some. The most commonly reported side effects are sedation and mild digestive upset — a small number of trial participants experienced digestive disturbances.
One case involved vivid dreams at higher doses. Lemon balm and lavender are generally well tolerated overall; lavender's most common side effects are mild digestive symptoms like nausea or constipation.
All five ingredients we could check advise against use during pregnancy due to insufficient safety data or possible effects. Breastfeeding safety is also unclear, so avoid these ingredients while nursing unless your doctor advises otherwise.
We hold no pregnancy or breastfeeding data for vervain.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Calm Support, double-check with your pharmacist if you use CNS depressants — sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioid pain relievers, or antihistamines that cause drowsiness. Also check if you take thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
If you use medications processed by the CYP3A4 enzyme (including some heart, cancer, and immune medications) or drugs that need OATP transporters to be absorbed, mention this product to your pharmacist too.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Calm Support is designed for children seeking support with everyday stress and relaxation, built on herbal extracts with some evidence for anxiety and sleep. It's not for you if you take sedating medications, sleep aids, or thyroid hormone replacement — the interactions are real and could make you much drowsier or affect how well your medications work.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any prescription drugs.

Calm Support by GaiaKids Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Calm Support by GaiaKids contains six ingredients, five of which we've checked for interactions with medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 850 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants — drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers. Five of the product's active ingredients (skullcap, passionflower, California poppy, lemon balm, and lavender) can all have additive sedative effects when combined with these medications.
This is a Moderate-severity interaction: you might experience stronger drowsiness, reduced alertness, or impaired thinking than either the medication or the supplement would cause alone.
Passionflower also interacts with two other drug types. It may theoretically reduce how well your body absorbs certain medications that use OATP transporters (a Minor interaction), and it may decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme, including some heart, cancer, and immunosuppressant medications (also Minor).
Lemon balm carries an additional Moderate concern: it might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy by blocking the hormone's action.
One ingredient, organic vervain extract, we could not check — we hold no data for it. Use the medication checker on this page to see whether your exact drugs interact with any of these ingredients before you start.

For each ingredient in Calm Support with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
organic Passionflower flowering vine extract
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
organic Lemon Balm extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
organic Skullcap aerial parts extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, skullcap can have additive effects when used with other CNS depressants.
Animal and clinical research suggests that skullcap can cause sedation and cognitive impairment.
organic California Poppy whole plant extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking California poppy with drugs with sedative effects may increase the risk of sedative effects.
Laboratory research shows that California poppy has sedative effects.
English Lavender extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
