Catnip Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Pure Herbs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Catnip against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Catnip by Pure Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: catnip aerial parts extract (the leaves, stems, and flowering tops). The extract form concentrates the plant's compounds into a liquid for easier dosing.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for catnip is limited. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for amenorrhea, anxiety, tension headaches, upper respiratory tract infections, indigestion (dyspepsia), or bloating (flatulence).
While catnip has a long history of traditional use, the clinical evidence to support it for these conditions isn't yet established in our monograph.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Catnip is generally well tolerated when used in amounts typical for tea. However, human safety data are limited, so caution is warranted.
The most common side effects from oral use are headache, malaise (a general sense of discomfort), and vomiting. Taking too much catnip may cause stomach upset and vomiting; in one case, a toddler who ingested a large amount of catnip tea developed stomach pain, irritability, and then lethargy and a hypnotic (sleep-like) state.
Avoid catnip during pregnancy—it may stimulate the uterus and safety has not been established. There is not enough safety information available for other situations, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it if you have any health concerns.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before using this product if you take lithium (a mood stabilizer)—catnip may raise its levels. Also double-check any central nervous system depressants, such as sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or certain pain relievers, as catnip may add to their sedative effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Catnip has a traditional history but limited scientific evidence for most conditions. If you're interested in trying it, steer clear if you take lithium or CNS depressants like sedatives or anxiety medications—those interactions are real.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have other health conditions.

Catnip by Pure Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pure Herbs Catnip Aerial Parts Extract has documented interactions with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication (often used for bipolar disorder). Catnip is thought to have diuretic properties—it increases urine output—which might reduce how much lithium your body excretes, potentially raising its levels to unsafe amounts.
If you take lithium, your dose may need to be adjusted.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Catnip also interacts with central nervous system (CNS) depressants—medications that slow brain activity, such as sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, and certain pain relievers. Because catnip itself has sedative properties, combining it with these drugs could cause additive effects like excessive drowsiness or reduced alertness.
Additionally, Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before adding this product, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor if you take either lithium or any CNS depressant.
