HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chelated Copper 5 mg by Carlson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: copper, in a chelated form (meaning it's bonded to amino acids for better absorption). Each tablet delivers 5 milligrams of elemental copper.
The product also includes several inactive ingredients—microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, ethylcellulose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate—which are binding and flow agents that help form and stabilize the tablet.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Copper supplementation is likely effective for treating copper deficiency, which can occur from malabsorption or certain medications. For other uses listed in our data—Alzheimer's disease, acne, chemotherapy-induced anemia, and brain tumors—the evidence isn't established enough to rate.
Copper is an essential mineral your body needs for nerve function, immune health, and energy production, but supplementing beyond addressing a deficiency hasn't been proven beneficial for those conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Copper from food and standard-dose supplements is generally well tolerated in most people. The main caution is that excess copper can be toxic, so stick to normal amounts and don't exceed recommendations without medical guidance.
Copper is needed during pregnancy, but stay within recommended intake and avoid high-dose supplements unless your doctor advises it. Very rarely, contact dermatitis (skin irritation) from copper exposure has been reported.
A small number of children in one trial developed superficial burns from topical copper sulfate, though that's not relevant to this oral tablet. If you have diabetes, be aware that people with diabetes tend to have higher copper levels in their blood than others, though it's unclear whether elevated copper contributes to diabetes itself.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take penicillamine (a medication for Wilson's disease or rheumatoid arthritis), separate this supplement by at least 2 hours. If you're on birth control pills or other hormonal contraceptives, your doctor or pharmacist should know you're adding copper, since it can raise your copper blood levels.
Use the medication search tool on this page to check all your prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is appropriate if you've been diagnosed with copper deficiency. If you take penicillamine or hormonal contraceptives, check with your pharmacist first—spacing or monitoring may be needed.
Stick to the recommended dose, and avoid high-dose copper supplements unless your doctor says otherwise.

Chelated Copper 5 mg by Carlson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Carlson's Chelated Copper 5 mg interacts with a small number of medications, with the most serious concern being penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen), a drug used to treat Wilson's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
Copper binds to penicillamine and reduces how much of it your body absorbs, which can lower its effectiveness. If you take penicillamine, you'll need to space this supplement and that medication at least 2 hours apart.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Copper also has a minor interaction with birth control pills (oral contraceptives). Studies show that long-term use of hormonal contraceptives raises copper levels in your blood by an average of 57 micrograms per deciliter—enough to push most people above the normal range.
While this is listed as minor, it's worth knowing if you're on hormonal birth control.
Altogether, these interactions span 31 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

Copper
Penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen)
Theoretically, taking copper with penicillamine might decrease the absorption of penicillamine; separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
Copper chelates penicillamine, which decreases its absorption and may reduce its clinical effects.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking copper with contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and toxic effects of copper.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.
