What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is pure chlorella blue-green algae powder in a broken-cell form — that's one active ingredient designed to make it easier for your body to absorb. There are no other active ingredients or fillers listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella has possibly effective evidence for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, the evidence we hold isn't established well enough to rate it.
That doesn't mean it won't help — just that the data available to us isn't clear enough to say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between suppliers. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity (skin reactions in the sun), and greenish stool discoloration.
These happen especially in the first two weeks. Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported.
For pregnancy, the safety data suggests it's possibly safe, but there isn't enough information on breastfeeding to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing or planning to become pregnant. The product information also notes that long-term safety hasn't been established, so unless your doctor specifically recommends it, it's best to skip it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this, check if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or other blood thinners — chlorella can make them less effective. Also check for any photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight).
If you're unsure whether your medications fall into these categories, ask your pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might help with pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but it interacts with blood thinners and photosensitizing drugs, and the long-term safety data is incomplete. If you take warfarin or any medication that makes your skin light-sensitive, check with your pharmacist first.
Even if you don't take those drugs, run your full medication list through the checker on this page before starting.

Chlorella Blue-Green Algae (Broken Cell) by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella Blue-Green Algae by BulkSupplements.com does interact with some medications, and the most serious concern is with blood thinners.
Chlorella contains significant vitamin K, which can reduce how warfarin (Coumadin) works in your body. There's at least one case report of someone's warfarin therapy becoming ineffective after starting chlorella supplements.
If you take warfarin, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second interaction to watch for is with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight). Chlorella itself can cause photosensitization — there are case reports of people developing rashes and red, raised lesions on sun-exposed skin after taking it.
Combining it with photosensitizing medications could have additive effects. Both of these interactions are rated Moderate.
Although we've identified these interactions, there are 337 individual medications affected across the ingredient categories we checked. Use the search tool on this page to look up your specific prescriptions before you start.

Chlorella Blue-Green Algae
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
