HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella Broken Cell by Hard Rhino
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a single-celled algae. Chlorella Broken Cell uses broken cell-wall chlorella, which may improve how well your body absorbs it compared to whole-cell forms.
The product contains no inactive fillers or other ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.
For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it — the data we have doesn't show whether it works for those conditions. Talk with your doctor about what chlorella might reasonably do for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between brands. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity (sun sensitivity), and changes in stool color.
These are usually mild and often show up in the first two weeks. In rare cases, serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported.
Because long-term safety data is limited, you should only use this product under your doctor's approval. For pregnancy, the safety data rates chlorella as possibly safe, but not enough information exists for breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take warfarin or other blood thinners — chlorella can reduce how well they work. Also double-check if you're on photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sun).
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might be worth considering if you're dealing with pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor agrees. If you take warfarin or photosensitizing medications, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first.
Quality varies widely between brands, so sourcing matters. Chat with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're on any prescription medications.

Chlorella Broken Cell by Hard Rhino Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella Broken Cell by Hard Rhino has documented interactions with two major drug types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin). Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works — there's at least one case report of warfarin becoming ineffective after someone started taking chlorella.
If you take warfarin, you'll need to talk with your doctor before using this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight). Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization in five case reports, where people developed swelling and red-purple lesions on sun-exposed skin after taking it.
Using it alongside photosensitizing medications could theoretically make that risk worse.
Additionally, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page to see whether any of yours are affected.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
