Complete Probiotics for Women Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Dr. Mercola
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Complete Probiotics for Women against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Complete Probiotics for Women by Dr. Mercola
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains 10 active ingredients, all probiotics: live bacterial strains from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups, including Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10, and Bifidobacterium longum longum UABL-14. Their role is to introduce live, active microorganisms into the digestive tract.
The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, gellan gum, fructooligosaccharides, ascorbyl palmitate, and silicon dioxide. These are inactive ingredients that help form and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence varies by strain. Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 is rated Possibly Effective for H. pylori, bacterial vaginosis, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Possibly Ineffective for atopic disease.
Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10 is rated Possibly Effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. For the rest, the evidence is insufficient to rate.
This includes Lactobacillus gasseri UALg-05 and Bifidobacterium longum longum UABL-14, which have insufficient reliable evidence for conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, asthma, and constipation. Insufficient reliable evidence to rate means the data we hold is not strong enough to judge effectiveness.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Some concern exists that live organisms could cause infection in certain patients, and a small number of rare serious infections have been linked to lactobacilli.
Gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea are described as uncommon. Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10 is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but those with weakened immune systems should be cautious.
During pregnancy, the data rates Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Bifidobacterium bifidum UABb-10, and Bifidobacterium longum longum UABL-14 as Possibly Safe. Lactobacillus gasseri UALg-05 has no pregnancy or lactation rating on file, and the lactation entries for the other strains are blank.
Because the data is limited, talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before using it while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the medication type to double-check before taking this product, rated Moderate. Because live probiotics can be killed by antibiotics, ask your own doctor or pharmacist how to time doses.
Interaction data for six of the strains is not available, so confirm your full medication list with them as well.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may be of interest if you are looking for a probiotic and have no antibiotic prescriptions. If you take antibiotics, or have a weakened immune system, be more careful and talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist first.
Several of the strains have limited or no data on file, so the evidence for this product as a whole is incomplete.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Complete Probiotics for Women from Dr.
Mercola does have documented interactions, and they all involve one drug type: antibiotics. Four of its ingredients carry this interaction: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Bifidobacterium longum.
The most serious severity listed is Moderate. Theoretically, antibiotics might decrease the effectiveness of these probiotics, since they can kill a significant number of the live organisms.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications. Every documented interaction is with antibiotic drugs, rated Moderate.
We could not check Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Lactobacillus reuteri, or Lactobacillus paracasei, because we hold no interaction data for them. That does not mean they are free of interactions.
Dr. Mercola's Blend for Women is a blend container, so we cannot assess it as a single item.
