Damiana Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Damiana against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Damiana by Herbalist & Alchemist
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried damiana herb extract. Damiana is a plant traditionally used for several purposes, though the evidence supporting its effects is limited in our data.
The liquid also holds ethyl alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients (the base that carries the herb extract).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on damiana is weak across the board. Our data lists it as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate for sexual dysfunction, asthma, headache, cognitive function, constipation, and depression.
That means either the studies don't exist, aren't robust enough, or are mixed — so we can't say it works for these uses based on what we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Damiana is likely okay in small food or tea amounts for most adults, but human safety data are thin. The main concern comes from very high doses: a 200-gram extract dose caused tetanus-like muscle spasms and convulsions resembling rabies or strychnine poisoning in reports — a reminder that "herbal" doesn't mean risk-free at all doses.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data either way. The advice is to avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless you've talked it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antidiabetes drugs — insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or similar medications that lower blood sugar. Damiana may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Damiana by Herbalist & Alchemist is generally well tolerated in typical amounts, but evidence for what it actually does is limited. If you take diabetes medication, this is a real interaction to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
Pregnant or nursing? Avoid it until you've checked with your healthcare provider.

Taking it with medications that lower blood sugar — like insulin or oral diabetes drugs — may push your glucose down too far (hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar). Animal studies show damiana itself lowers blood glucose, so the risk is real, even if it hasn't been fully studied in people.
