HelloPharmacist Scorecard of DL-Malic Acid by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: DL-Malic Acid, a compound naturally found in fruits and part of your body's energy production. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence here is thin. Malic acid is possibly effective for dry mouth, but for acne, GERD, fatigue, fibromyalgia, and psoriasis, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
If dry mouth is what you're after, the research is more promising — but talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to see if it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Malic acid in food amounts is generally well tolerated, but supplement doses haven't been well studied. The facts advise caution and suggest avoiding supplement doses unless your doctor recommends it.
When taken by mouth, it seems well tolerated overall, though diarrhea and nausea have been reported in people taking a specific combination product with malic acid and magnesium — though it's unclear which ingredient caused the symptoms. If you apply it to skin, eye irritation, skin irritation, and peeling can happen, and stronger reactions like hives and contact dermatitis have occurred in people challenged with high amounts.
Malic acid is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but the supplement form hasn't been studied in these populations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives). Malic acid may increase the risk of low blood pressure when combined with these drugs.
No interactions are documented for any other medication types in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a single-ingredient powder best considered if you're interested in malic acid's potential for dry mouth and your doctor or pharmacist agrees it's right for you. The biggest caution is if you take blood pressure medication — you'll want to check that combination first.
Because supplement doses haven't been well studied, it's worth confirming with your own healthcare provider before you start.
