What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: DL-Malic Acid, a compound found naturally in fruits and other foods. It's included in supplements for a few possible uses, though the evidence behind most of them is still being studied.
There are no inactive ingredients in this powder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
DL-Malic Acid is possibly effective for dry mouth. For acne, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), fatigue, fibromyalgia, and psoriasis, the evidence we have isn't strong enough to say whether it works — these uses are listed as having insufficient reliable evidence.
If you're thinking about this supplement for one of those other conditions, talk it over with your doctor, since the data doesn't yet support their use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, malic acid is generally well tolerated, especially in food amounts. When taken as a supplement at higher doses, though, the safety profile hasn't been well studied, so caution is advised — avoid it unless your doctor has given you the go-ahead.
Common side effects reported in studies include diarrhea and nausea, though in one case it's unclear whether malic acid itself or the magnesium in that particular product caused them. Topically, it can cause skin irritation, peeling, hives, and contact dermatitis.
Malic Acid is rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take blood pressure–lowering medication (antihypertensives), this supplement could theoretically increase the risk of your blood pressure dropping too low. Check your exact drugs with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
