What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: elderberry extract powder at 3000 mg per serving. Elderberry is made from the fruit of the elder plant and has been used traditionally to support immune and respiratory health.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients (microcrystalline cellulose, modified cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide) that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on elderberry for common uses—hay fever, heart health, chronic fatigue, COPD, brain function, and respiratory infections—is insufficient to establish that it works for any of these. That doesn't mean it doesn't; it means reliable studies haven't been completed yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Properly cooked elderberry products are generally well tolerated. Raw or unripe berries, seeds, leaves, and bark can be toxic and may cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, numbness, and stupor—but cooking eliminates this risk.
One case report described autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation) in a person with an underlying autoimmune disease who took elderberry for several years; liver function improved after stopping the supplement. There isn't enough safety data to recommend elderberry supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check if you take an immunosuppressant medication or pazopanib (Votrient). Both have Moderate interactions with elderberry.
Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Elderberry may be worth considering if you're looking to support immunity or respiratory health, but the evidence isn't strong yet. If you take an immunosuppressant medication (especially after a transplant) or pazopanib for cancer, this product isn't a good fit.
