That said, since these products contain live microorganisms, there's a small theoretical concern they could cause infection in some patients — though serious cases (like bacteremia, sepsis, or infections of the liver, spleen, or heart lining) are extremely rare and usually happen in people with other underlying conditions.

You may experience mild stomach side effects like gas, bloating, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea when you first start, but these are uncommon. In one clinical trial, a few people reported rash or itching, though it's unclear whether those were caused by the L. acidophilus itself or something else.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
