Fennel Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Fennel against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: fennel powder. Fennel is the whole herb used as a concentrated supplement.
The product also contains pure fennel powder as an inactive ingredient—meaning there are no added fillers or binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Fennel is possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (painful periods). For other uses—bronchitis, anxiety, bedwetting, and cholera—we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
If you're considering fennel for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Fennel is generally well tolerated when eaten as a food. As a concentrated powder supplement, it warrants more caution.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal discomfort, increased sun sensitivity, and allergic reactions in people with fennel sensitivity—though these are not common. Rarely, seizures have been reported.
Some people with asthma have experienced bronchial symptoms after taking fennel. During pregnancy, avoid medicinal or concentrated doses because of limited safety data and fennel's hormone-like effects.
While breastfeeding, food amounts are likely fine, but medicinal doses haven't been well studied—check with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking fennel, double-check if you use anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners), birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, tamoxifen, ciprofloxacin, or medications broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system—all carry documented moderate interactions. Use the search tool on this page to verify your specific medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Fennel powder may help with painful periods, but it's not proven for other common uses. If you take blood thinners, birth control, hormone therapy, tamoxifen, ciprofloxacin, or any liver-metabolized drugs, check with your pharmacist first.
It's generally well tolerated, but concentrated doses aren't recommended during pregnancy.

Fennel by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Fennel by BulkSupplements.com has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners)—animal research suggests fennel oil may increase bleeding risk. Fennel contains compounds with estrogen-like activity, which theoretically could reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, as well as interfere with tamoxifen, a hormone-blocking cancer medication.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, fennel may raise levels of certain drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system, a moderate concern in theory though not yet reported in people. Fennel also appears to reduce how well ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is absorbed, possibly cutting its levels by half.
Altogether, these interactions span 730 individual medications.
These interactions are mostly theoretical—many are based on lab or animal studies, not human trials. That said, if you take any blood thinners, hormonal medications, tamoxifen, or ciprofloxacin, check your exact drugs with the search tool below before adding this supplement.

Fennel
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, fennel might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Theoretically, fennel might decrease the levels and clinical effects of ciprofloxacin.
Animal research shows that fennel reduces ciprofloxacin bioavailability by nearly 50%, possibly due to the metal cations such as calcium, iron, and magnesium contained in fennel. This study also found that fennel increased tissue distribution and slowed elimination of ciprofloxacin.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the effects of contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the antiestrogenic effect of tamoxifen.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity, which may interfere with the antiestrogenic activity of tamoxifen.
