What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Grunt Pineapple Banana against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Grunt Pineapple Banana contains 9 amino acids — the building blocks your body uses to build and repair muscle. The active ingredients are L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, L-valine, L-histidine, L-threonine, L-tryptophan, and L-lysine.
These are essential and conditionally essential amino acids commonly included in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) and complete amino acid formulas aimed at muscle support and recovery. The powder also contains inactive ingredients — citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, sucralose, acesulfame-K, and silica — which serve as sweeteners, thickeners, and flavor enhancers.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on individual amino acids in this product is sparse. L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores.
L-methionine is possibly effective for preventing neural tube birth defects. L-phenylalanine appears to be possibly ineffective for ADHD and possibly effective for vitiligo.
For the other ingredients — L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-valine, L-histidine, and L-tryptophan — the evidence we hold either shows insufficient evidence to rate or is not established for their common uses. If your goal is muscle recovery or athletic performance, the data on these specific amino acids in this formulation isn't established in our records.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-phenylalanine is not safe for people with PKU (phenylketonuria) and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. L-tryptophan may cause mild side effects like nausea, headache, and drowsiness, and it carries a historical caution because a contaminated batch caused serious illness in the late 1980s — modern products are monitored, but it's best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
L-methionine and L-threonine are generally well tolerated at food amounts, though high doses aren't well studied in pregnancy and breastfeeding. L-lysine is generally well tolerated but long-term safety at high doses isn't established, and supplement use in pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn't been well studied.
L-histidine from food is safe, but supplement safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well established. We have no pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data on file for L-valine or L-leucine.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check your medications: levodopa (Major interaction with L-phenylalanine), CNS depressants like sedatives and opioids (Major interaction with L-tryptophan), serotonergic antidepressants and migraine drugs (Moderate interaction with L-tryptophan), MAOIs (Moderate interaction with L-phenylalanine), baclofen (Moderate interaction with L-phenylalanine), NMDA antagonists (Major interaction with L-threonine), and 5-HT4 agonists for IBS (Minor interaction with L-lysine).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is an amino acid powder aimed at muscle support — common in fitness and recovery contexts. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's, use sedatives or sleep aids, take antidepressants, use certain migraine or pain medications, or take baclofen or MAOIs, you'll need to check with your pharmacist before using it.
L-phenylalanine users and those pregnant or breastfeeding should have a conversation with their doctor or pharmacist first.

Grunt Pineapple Banana by Redcon1 Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Grunt Pineapple Banana by Redcon1 contains several amino acids, and some of them interact with medications.
L-phenylalanine is the ingredient with the most serious concerns: it can significantly reduce how well levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) works by competing with it for transport into the brain, which may worsen tremor, stiffness, and the "on-off" effect.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-tryptophan also carries major concerns — it can add to the sedative effects of central nervous system depressants (like sedatives, sleeping pills, and opioids), potentially making you too drowsy. It may also combine with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, including SSRIs and SNRIs, plus certain migraine and pain medications) to raise the risk of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects.
L-threonine interacts with NMDA antagonists (a class of neurological medications) and may reduce their effectiveness. L-phenylalanine also affects baclofen (a muscle relaxer) by reducing how much your body absorbs, and it can theoretically increase blood pressure risk if combined with older antidepressants called MAOIs.
L-lysine has a minor interaction with 5-HT4 agonists (certain drugs for IBS and gastrointestinal issues). We were unable to check L-leucine, L-isoleucine, and L-valine — we hold no interaction data for those.
Altogether, these interactions span 407 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the medication checker on this page before you start.

For each ingredient in Grunt Pineapple Banana with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Tryptophan
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-tryptophan with CNS depressants might cause additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that L-tryptophan can cause fatigue and drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining L-tryptophan with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.
L-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
L-Threonine
Nmda Antagonists
Theoretically, threonine might decrease the effects of NMDA antagonists.
Threonine increases central nervous system (CNS) glycine levels. Glycine seems to bind a site on NMDA receptors and enhance the activity of the receptors.
L-Lysine
5-Ht4 Agonists
Theoretically, lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists.
Animal research suggests that L-lysine is a partial serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) antagonist and inhibits diarrhea induced by the 5-HT4 agonist, 5-hydroxytryptophane.
